The Canary Islands is a Spanish archipelago situated about 150km off the north-west coast of Africa and has been a popular holiday destination for European tourists for a number of years now. Although the archipelago is made up of 13 separate islands there are 4 islands that are more popular with tourists, those being Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria is often considered the most interesting amongst tourists due to the diversity of cultures, climates and attractions available on the island.
Gran Canaria has a population of over 800,000 making it the second most populous island in the archipelago. Its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the largest city in the Canary Islands and was first established over 500 years ago during the Castilian invasion of the island, supported by the then Queen of Spain, Isabella I. Gran Canaria is a fantastic holiday destination for a number of reasons and if you are considering making the trip, below are some more factors to help persuade you.
The climate of Gran Canaria is sub-tropical, with hot, sunny summers and only slightly less hot winters when the temperature drops to a daily mean in the coolest month (January) of 18 degrees Celsius. Gran Canaria is known for its diversity in terms of geography which comes from the evolution of the landscape over millions of years of volcanic activity, the last eruptions were estimated to have happened over 3500 years ago, so there is no cause for alarm there!
As previously mentioned, Gran Canaria is known for its diverse landscape, stunning views and beautiful scenery and as such is often referred to as a miniature continent. Although the town of Playa del Ingls is often considered a destination primarily for the gay community, it is not limited to people of this sexual orientation and contains a huge variety of bars and nightclubs to suit all tastes. The most popular area for night-time antics is the Plaza de Espaa located in the Mesa y Lopz district of Las Palmas where you can find hundreds of bars and clubs and thousands of tourists enjoying them.
