The airline recycles newspapers, plastics, and aluminum cans. The money received from all those recyclables has been put toward Habitat for Humanity. They also recycle worn carpets from the planes, and have established recycling protocols for employees at their offices. They have also used an environmentally friendly coating for their aircraft before painting. This is good for the environment, keeping hazardous chemicals out of the stream, but speeds drying time, and uses less water. The savings are on the bottom line as well as a boon to the environment. Leading airline United Airlines is currently converting to paperless flight decks and distributing 11,000 iPads to all United and Continental pilots. United is the first major airline in the US to completely eliminate paper by using the iPad. The electronic flight bags (EFB) provide pilots with paperless aeronautical navigational charts through an iPad app. All United Airline pilots will have the technology and iPad by the end of the year.
